Ingress Protection Markings, also known as IP Ratings, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures.
The numbers that follow IP each have a specific meaning. The first indicates the degree of protection (of people) from moving parts, as well as the protection of enclosed equipment from foreign bodies. The second defines the protection level that the enclosure enjoys from various forms of moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc).
The first digit, or Solids Digit, ranks on a scale of 1 – 6. 1 is the least amount of protection, 6 is completely dust tight.
The second digit, or Liquids Digit, ranks on a scale of 1 – 8. At ranking 1, the fixture is barely protected from moisture, while at ranking 8 the fixture is able to be completely submmerged in liquid for long periods of time without damage.
Ratings you will commonly see on our products:
IP65: Dust tight and protected against jets of water.
IP66: Dust tight and protected against water from heavy seas or water projected in powerful jets. No harmful amount of water will get inside the fixture.
